After the age of 1 month until the first birthday, the most common causes of death are related to unsafe sleep practices. This training was designed to increase Sleep-related infant death and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) risk reduction awareness and educate home visitors on how to promote safe sleep practices among families.
Participants will learn how to use Motivational Interviewing techniques to help parents understand and motivate themselves to practice safe sleep recommendations with their infants.

By the end of this training, Home Visitors will be able to:

  • Discuss safe sleep recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics
  • Identify ways to decrease the risk factors for sleep-related deaths in infants
  • Explain safe sleep recommendations to others
  • Recommend safe sleep resources to families and provide educational materials on how to reduce the risk of sleep-related infant death.

Home visitors are mandated reporters and therefore required by law to report any suspected child abuse or neglect. Making a report of this kind can be very difficult. This training was created to minimize the difficulty of reporting by preparing home visitors for the process, helping them to better understand the reporting requirements, and gain a greater incite of the process that occurs once the report has been made.

By the end of this training, Home Visitors will be able to:

  • Better recognize the signs of child abuse & neglect
  • Specify the types of child abuse and neglect
  • Understand how to report abuse and/or neglect to the hotline and have knowledge of what occurs after making the report

This project is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as a part of an award to the Arkansas Department of Health totaling $7,784,751.00.
